Thankful Thursday

I don't usually post personal stories on here (I leave that up to Boots on his own blog), but today I really wanted to share my Thankful Thursday story.

A few months ago I saw this photo on Facebook.

This sweet kitty had been living with a colony, but when his eye started looking funny (the blue eye, the white looking one was from an old injury) his caretaker called the shelter for help. Sadly, because of his FIV status he could not remain at the shelter. The only choices were to find him a home (which for an FIV+ cat, long time former stray, around 10-15yrs. old with eye problems, is not easy) or to euthanize him. As soon as I saw his photo I knew he was my kitty. He almost immediately fit into our household as if he had always been there. I have young 2 FIV- cats, Boots and Bruin, and they are fine living with an FIV+ old man cat. We love him, and named him Odin.

Two months ago we thought Odin may be heading towards the end. He was sick, and without an expensive test our vet thought that he may have cancer. The test would only confirm the diagnosis, not change the outcome, so we chose to forgo it and instead treat with antibiotics incase in was just a simple stomach infection. My boy Odin decided he was not done, and rebounded, more energetic than before he became sick.

Yesterday again we began to fear the worst. Odin was lethargic, not finishing his food (though still eating some), and was simply not himself. Again we prepared ourselves for the end, only to see a few hours later a sore near his back leg. Within the hour the abscess ruptured, and we headed off to the emergency vet. After spending a good part of yesterday crying, thinking I was about to lose my kitty, it turned out to be a simple fix. I think my Odin was born with even more than nine lives, because anytime something happens he refuses to give up and rebounds.

I picked up my sweet, blind Odin from the hospital this morning. He was in his carrier, and as soon as he heard my voice he perked up, looking around to try and figure out where I was. Today he is home resting with my husband, being every bit a safe, indoor kitty - a total transformation from his life just 6 months ago. Every day I am so thankful for him, and the joy he brings to our home. My special kitty, who uses pee pads instead of a litter box, who gives me headbutts and the loudest purrs, who eats whatever food I feed him and sleeps at my feet under my desk, I am forever thankful for him. Even though his time with us will be short, we love him, and will love him forever. Love you, Odin.

Centre County PAWS offering $5 feline adoptions in May!

Centre County PAWS, Inc. is a no-kill shelter located in State College, PA. They are committed to finding forever homes cats and dogs, educating about responsible pet ownership, providing spay/neutering assistance, and ending pet overpopulation. For the month of May they are celebrating their adoptable cats with a month long campaign - $5 adoption fees for cats one year and older! Interested persons can check out their adoptable cats page, or stop by to meet the cats during shelter hours. The shelter is open Monday evenings 5-7pm, Tuesdays 11am - 2pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 11am-4pm. The best days to meet the cats are Saturdays and Sundays, when the cats living in foster homes are at PAWS for the weekend.

Here is a wonderful article that the Chicago Tribune wrote about the campaign.

I know, it seems a bit strange to have a "sale" on cats, but campaigns like this not only attract potential forever families that may otherwise be deterred by high adoption rates, they also help make room for the shelter to accept, and save, even more adoptable pets. Please pass this along to anyone you think may be interested in adopting a wonderful, furry feline companion!

Blog the Change: How two kitties changed my life

My kitties are not rescues. They were not officially adopted. They were not given to me by a friend, the woman next door, or as a gift from a boyfriend. No, my kitties were a spur-of-the-moment decision, made when someone had a dog crate full of free kittens at a yard sale that I stopped at. It was hot, they were in the sun. I felt bad. I chose one, a tiny black kitty. She looked so sad and lonely that less than five minutes later I was carrying out her tuxedo brother as well. They were meant to be a gift to my father, a cat man if there ever was one. They never made it there. Instead they are currently snoring beside me, one at my feet and one in the window sill. My babies. My life.

The kitties, ready to go to
their new home
As an adult I had never been a cat person. I liked them well enough, but never really wanted one of my own. My (then) fiance, now husband, had mentioned getting one several times when we first moved in together, always to be shot down by me. It was always too much work, too much responsibility. And the expense of pet ownership was overwhelming! So we were cat-less, enjoying life without hairballs or litter boxes. Until last June.

I still cannot tell you what made me decide to bring these two furballs into my life. Yes, they were meant for my father, but I don't even think I was home from the yard sale before I knew that they were with me to stay. My Boots, my Bruin; I cannot imagine my life without them now. There are the little changes that have come with having kitties - I sleep curled up on my side now, not spread out, because the kitties take up too much room on the bed. PetSmart is a new favorite store. And I keep vinegar on hand at all times for those days when my cat thinks it is 100% okay to pee in the hamper. Little changes, things I barely notice. Then there are the big changes....

a new toy
I have always been a coupon person, so the day the kitties came home I began looking online for deals and coupons. Though I found a good amount, I realized there were only one or two sites really dedicated to finding pet deals. Instead I had to sift through other sites, keeping an eagle eye out for that mention about Fancy Feast and Science Diet. That is how Four Paw Savings, and my presence in the blogging world, began. And I love it! Through it I have learned so much, met so many people, and gotten involved in so many great causes (like this one!). Now instead of watching TV when I have nothing else to do, I work on my blog. I research. I write, delete, then write again. I read about blogging, and ways to make it better. I teach myself basic HTML. And I read LOTS of other pet blogs. Without my babies I never would have entered into this world, would not be writing this now, and would have no idea that causes like Blog the Change even existed.

Boots, the feline face
of Four Paw Savings
I run a pet savings blog, so when there is a super deal, I hear about it. It did not take me very long to realize that 1.) I was able to get tons of pet food for super cheap (most of it I didn't need), and 2.) that many people who really needed these deals knew nothing about them. I began to wonder if there were such things as "pet food banks." Just like the people food banks, but with pet food. I was excited to discover that yes, there were indeed pet food banks, but that sadly none existed near me. Instead those living in my area, when unable to feed their pets are forced to surrender them to shelters, or *gasp!* abandon them on the streets. That was all it took for me. Last November I contacted a local food bank run through a church in town, told them my idea, and they now distribute pet food to local families in need, as well as seniors who are struggling to feed their furry companions. The pet food is currently mostly donated by me and people I know, but it is a start. Someday I hope to have a "real" pet food bank, one that requires a storage facility and has volunteers and donation bins and cool t-shirts that say "STAFF" on them. It is a dream, a goal, a future endeavor that without my kitties I never would have even known was possible.

Bruin, my pretty girl
It is incredible to think about how much my life has changed in less than a year, all because I took in two kitties out of the hot sun one day at a yard sale. I love my life with them. They make me so happy, and helped fill a life that I never realized was so empty. My husband loves them too, often texting me during the day that he misses the kitties while at work. For someone who was not a cat person a year ago, I certainly spend much of my life around them. I now regularly volunteer with an adoption center, donate food to local shelters, maintain Four Paw Savings, and even one day hope to have a sanctuary for all those wonderful kitties who are considered "unadoptable" because of medical status (such as FIV/FIL) or special needs. For a 20-something year old who still had no clue what she wanted from life a year ago, I think I have certainly found my place.

I am going to ask that all of you who read this blog and use this deals, please take some of them and donate the products to either a local shelter or rescue group. There are many great deals to grab, even free ones, and all it takes is a bit of your time. If you think that requesting a free sample of dog food to donate is not worth it, please realize that every little bit helps. Those small donations add up to make a really big difference. Need a place to start? Check out the "freebie" tag on this site.

Bruin watching the Bruins

We are Boston sports fans in our house. I am sitting curled up with a Red Sox blanket on the couch, and my fiance just walked in wearing his New England Patriots sweatshirt. So last June, in the midst of the Stanley Cup playoffs, when we brought two kittens into our home, it seemed only logical that we named the all black kitten Bruin.

When we got the kittens, the Boston Bruins had already lost 2 games to the Canucks. The next game my fiance curled up with his new kitten, and the two of them watched the game together. And the Bruins won! The next game, same thing, with our little kitten watching the TV in awe as she tried to figure out what was moving on the screen. Again, the Bruins won. The next game we were over a friend's, without our kitty, and the Bruins lost. That was it for my fiance - he and Bruin watched the rest of the games together, curled up on the couch in the living room, both sets of eyes glued to the the TV (and yes, I know that cats don't watch TV, but she really did. Maybe she was just trying to impress her new family), and the Bruins won the Stanley Cup that year. My fiance is convinced it was all because of our special kitty.

Bruin is our black and gold kitty. She has a yellow collar. Her favorite thing in the world is to curl up on our Bruins blanket (she cries when we move it or it has to be washed). And yes, she even continues to watch hockey games on TV with my fiance. So is it all in a name? I can't be sure, but I do know that we definitely have a little hockey fan in our home.

The kitties (Boots and his sister Bruin) and I are participating in a Blog Hop over at Tillman Skates! to win a 1,000 lb. donation of Nature's Balance to our shelter or rescue of choice! The kitties know how important finding the right family is, and how expensive it can be to feed so many animals, and so they want to win the prize to help homeless pets. Look for our weekly entries, and check out the other blogs participating. No matter who wins, the biggest winners are the shelters and rescues that receive the donations.

Box Hopping with Boots!

Playful does not even begin to describe my kitty Boots. He is energetic, full of life, and into EVERYTHING! He can be such a naughty kitty, often getting into things he knows he shouldn't - like the "kitty cabinet" (where food is stored), a roll of paper towels we forgot to put away, plastic bags waiting to be re-used, etc. Even so, he keeps us laughing, and is one of the sweetest kitties  you could imagine.

From the time he was a kitten, my boy Boots has loved boxes. Anytime we get a new box he is right there, ready to jump in. He loves jumping in and out of the boxes over and over. It doesn't matter what size the box is, he even tries to get into the empty cereal boxes! I wish I had a photo of that - Boots with his head inside the box, his back end sticking out, pushing the box across the kitchen floor trying to get his whole body inside.
He loves to play "Kitty in a Box," where we close up the box and tap on the top as he tries to chase the sound. When we open the box back up he sticks his head out for a second, then curls back up on the bottom of the box so we can close it up again!

At any given time there are usually several boxes laying around our apartment, waiting for Boots to jump in. And when all his energy is spent, then he curls up in his box for a nap.
